In Norway, it is currently only possible for EU/EEA citizens to be an au pair, since the previous au pair scheme for non-EU candidates was discontinued in 2024. EU citizens can still live and work in Norway under free-movement rules.
Au pairs typically receive NOK 7,000 per month in pocket money. Host families also provide board and lodging, meaning free accommodation and meals in the family home.
Based on this, the average total monthly cost for host families is around NOK 7,800.
Some families also choose to contribute to extra costs such as transport, language courses, or a phone plan, which can slightly increase the total monthly cost.

In Norway, health insurance is generally the responsibility of the host family. The host family must ensure that the au pair is adequately insured during the stay in Norway.
Depending on the au pairβs nationality and duration of stay, the au pair may also become covered by the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme after registration. Additional private insurance is often recommended for the initial arrival period and for extra coverage.

The aftercare, contract, and visa support package at β¬68 per month is priced the same as the self-match Membership; itβs recommended to keep it running throughout your au pair term to avoid stress and to allow your au pair access to the au pair community and support.
Itβs optional, but Nina.care is an au pair Agency, meaning we cover not just the search for your au pair, but we are there for you during rematch, registration, visa, and contract questions.

In Norway, the host family is generally responsible for covering the au pairβs arrival and return travel costs.
This includes the flight ticket to Norway at the start of the stay and the return ticket to the au pairβs home country at the end of the placement.
Some host families may additionally support extra travel-related expenses, depending on the agreement made with the au pair before arrival.
The pocket money is paid directly by the host family to the au pair.
Once the au pair arrives in the host country, it is important that they open a local bank account so the monthly payments can be transferred easily. For candidates from the EU, it is often not necessary to open a local bank account.
There is always a small risk that a match does not work out as expected. To reduce this risk, our after-care package includes an alignment meeting between the host family and the au pair before the placement begins. During this meeting, important topics such as the start date, pocket money, vacation days, weekly schedule, and expectations are discussed to make sure everyone is on the same page.
If the match still does not work out, there is a 2β4-week transition period during which both the host family and the au pair can look for a new match or decide on next steps.
When Premium Matching Service families have an active βAftercare packageβ at the time of rematch, we will find them a new candidate at no extra cost.
