In Greece, there is no fixed government pocket money rate, but most families provide €500 per month. Host families must also provide free accommodation, meals, and cover health insurance. Some families additionally contribute to travel or language course expenses.
An au pair helps with childcare (school runs, babysitting, playing, homework support) and light household tasks (meal preparation, tidying children’s rooms, laundry). They cannot do heavy cleaning, gardening, or professional childcare work.
The typical arrangement is 25–30 hours per week, spread across 5–6 days. The au pair must have at least one full day off per week. Paid holiday is usually agreed upon in the contract for stays longer than 6 months.
Yes. A written contract is required to define hours, duties, pocket money, holidays, and living conditions. This protects both the family and the au pair and is important for visa applications.
Families in Greece usually find au pairs through international platforms or specialized agencies. Agencies can support with visa processes and agreements.
If communication does not resolve issues, either side may terminate the contract with notice. Agencies (if involved) can mediate and help with a replacement.
An au pair is welcomed as a temporary family member. They share meals, outings, and daily family life. The Greek au pair experience is about cultural exchange: the family gains new perspectives, and the au pair experiences Greek language, food, and traditions.
