Hosting an au pair in Italy usually costs around €350 per month. This includes the required pocket money (set by agreement with the au pair), free room and board, and contributions to health/accident insurance if needed. Families may also support the au pair’s Italian language course.
An au pair in Italy mainly helps with childcare (school pick-ups, playing, babysitting, homework support) and light household duties (tidying children’s rooms, setting the table, simple meal preparation). Heavy cleaning, gardening, or caring for elderly relatives is not allowed.
The usual arrangement is 25–30 hours per week, with a maximum of about 5 hours per day. The au pair must have at least one full day off per week, and paid holiday applies if they stay for several months (e.g., 2–4 weeks for a 12-month stay).
A written au pair contract is required in Italy. It should outline working hours, duties, pocket money, holiday, insurance, and the length of stay. This contract is also necessary for visa or residence permit applications.
Families may find au pairs through online platforms, au pair agencies, or private contacts. Many use agencies to simplify paperwork, especially for non-EU applicants.
If difficulties arise, families and au pairs should try direct communication first. If that doesn’t work, the contract can be ended with reasonable notice (often 2 weeks). Agencies, if involved, can help mediate and arrange a rematch.
Italian families are known for being warm and family-oriented. An au pair is expected to be part of family life, join meals, outings, and cultural traditions. Sharing languages and cultural experiences is seen as an important part of the stay.
