Becoming an Au Pair (or Host Family!) in Greece: Your Complete Guide 🇬🇷

Jasmijn

When thinking about a Mediterranean paradise, the streets of the white towns and the turquoise waters of the Greek islands come to mind. Greece is the home of ancient, beautiful monuments and beautiful landscapes, and one of the most charming countries in the world. For au pairs, Greece is the perfect place for your next dream adventure. For families, au pairing is the perfect chance to share their culture and learning about new ones, all of this while receiving flexible childcare. Whether you’re a future au pair or a host family, this guide has everything you need!

Au Pair Requirements: No Tzatziki Without the Basics 🥒

Thinking about becoming an au pair in Greece? Here’s what you need to qualify. To join a Greek host family, you must:

  • Be 18–30 years old
  • Be unmarried and have no children
  • Have a basic knowledge of Greek or English so you can communicate effectively
  • Have completed secondary school or vocational training
  • Be ready to live with a host family for at least 6–12 months
  • Have childcare experience and be comfortable helping with daily routines, homework, and activities
  • Be excited to participate in family life and explore Greek culture firsthand.

If you meet all the above, congratulations! Greece is ready to welcome you. If not, don’t worry, there are many other countries where you can enjoy an au pair adventure.

Visa and Paperwork:

EU / EFTA Citizens

Good news! If you’re from the EU, EEA, or Switzerland, you don’t need a visa to au pair in Greece!

You’ll simply:

  • Travel to Greece with your passport/ID
  • Register with local authorities once you arrive
  • Sign an au pair placement agreement (convention) with your host family

NON EU Citizens

To be an Au Pair in Greece if you are not from EU/EFTA, you need a VISA. There is no standard “au-pair visa” for non-EU citizens to go as au pair to Greece, but you may be able to get a work permit. You can:

  • Contact your local Greek Embassy to see if they qualify for a work permit.
  • Submit application documents for the resident permit (must be submitted in Greek!)

Why Choose Greece?

Living with a Greek host family is more than simply providing childcare; it is an opportunity to experience Greek culture firsthand. You can expect to help with children and assist with light household duties each week. You will also participate in family meals, join outings, and take part in Greek traditions. There are many opportunities to learn Greek while improving your English skills. During your free time, you can explore cities, islands, beaches, and historical sites. From morning routines to weekend trips across the islands, every day is an adventure filled with sunshine, culture, and new experiences.

Greece offers:

🇬🇷 Beautiful beaches, islands, and historic cities

🏛️ Rich cultural heritage and local traditions

👨‍👩‍👧 A chance to become part of a welcoming Greek family

🌿 Opportunities to learn Greek or improve English

☀️ A warm, sunny environment ideal for outdoor activities

💛 Cultural exchange that benefits both your family and the au pair

Host Family Requirements:

Want to welcome an au pair into your Greek household? Here’s what you need to know. Your family should be able to:

  • Have at least one child under 18 living at home
  • Provide your au pair with a private room
  • Involve your au pair in childcare and light household tasks
  • Speak Greek or English in daily life
  • Commit to hosting your au pair for the duration of the stay
  • Be able to support the au pair with food, accommodation, and a weekly allowance

If that all sounds good, wonderful! You’re ready to start your search and find the perfect au pair. If your household doesn’t meet the requirements, unfortunately, you cannot host an au pair, but other cultural exchange options may still be available.
