In Germany, au pairs usually receive a set amount of pocket money each month which is β¬280 per month directly paid to the au pair. This is separate from the free room and meals that host families provide during the stay.
Families also contribute up to β¬70 per month toward a language course. Other optional costs can include a public transport pass, a phone plan, or occasional additional babysitting. Because of this, the total monthly cost for families comes to an average of β¬420 per month, depending on what additional support is included.

β’ The Matching Service can also be cancelled if you no longer need assistance for any reason, but itβs a successfee: We commit to finding your au pair and will share several rounds of candidates until we do.

In Germany, health insurance is the responsibility of the host family. The host family is legally required to arrange and pay for adequate health insurance for the au pair for the entire duration of the stay.
The insurance must cover medical treatment, hospitalization, accidents, pregnancy-related care, and repatriation if necessary.
We recommend working with providers such as Dr. Walter, which offers a βYoung Backpack / Au Pair Travel Insuranceβ package including dental coverage, with a good priceβquality balance.
Monthly basic expenses include
1. Au pairβs pocket money: +- β¬280 p/m
2. Food and accommodation: provided by host
As the au pair does not receive a high pocket money, itβs kind to help a bit with small extra. β¨This is optional, but can help to find a great match as well
β’ Travel allowance: β¬65 p/m
β’ Phone plan: β¬20 p/m
β’ Gym membership: β¬40 p/m
β’ Museum card or cinema card: β¬30 p/m
Or other benefits to help your au pair feel more comfortable and welcome during their stay.
The aftercare, contract and visa support package at β¬68 per month has thesame price as the self match Membership: itβs recommended to keep it running throughout your au pair term to avoid stress and allow your au pair access to the au pair community and support.β¨β¨Itβs optional, but Nina.care is an au pair Agency, meaning we cover not just the search of your au pair, but we are there for you during rematch, registration, visa and contract questions.
Arrange your au pair without missing anything and continue the β¬68 per month membership during the term.
There is no specific legal rule in Germany regarding who must pay for the au pairβs arrival and departure flights.
We recommend host families to contribute to the travel costs, for example by covering 50% of the flight ticket. As the au pair exchange is a mutual cultural experience and the pocket money is limited, this support is often greatly appreciated.
Some host families choose to cover the full flight ticket, which is of course very generous. At the same time, we believe it is positive for the au pair to also contribute personally to the experience and investment.
Please note that agreements regarding travel expenses should always be discussed and confirmed clearly before the start of the au pair stay.
The pocket money is paid directly by the host family to the au pair.
Once the au pair arrives in the host country, it is important that they open a local bank account so the monthly payments can be transferred easily. For candidates from the EU, it is often not necessary to open a local bank account.
There is always a small risk that a match does not work out as expected. To reduce this risk, our after care package includes an alignment meeting between the host family and the au pair before the start of the placement. During this meeting, important topics such as the start date, pocket money, vacation days, weekly schedule, and expectations are discussed to make sure everyone is on the same page.
If the match still does not work out, there is a transition period of 2β4 weeks during which both the host family and the au pair can look for a new match or decide on the next steps.
When Premium Matching Service families have an actie βAftercare packageβ at moment of rematch, we will find them a new candidate without extra costs.
