Au pair pricing in the USA

Monthly Costs ($860 average)

In the United States, au pair programs follow a regulated structure where au pairs receive a minimum weekly pocket money of about $195.75, which equals roughly $785 per month.

Host families provide free room and meals, and program rules already take these living costs into account, so they are not deducted from the stipend.

Families may also contribute toward education requirements, travel, or additional activities, which brings the average monthly cost for families to around $860.

Under the US Department of State au pair program, host families are required to provide health insurance that meets a defined minimum standard. The coverage must be in place from the au pair’s arrival date. Au pairs are encouraged to review the policy carefully, as the required minimum may not cover all situations, particularly dental, vision, or mental health care, and supplemental coverage can be purchased independently if desired.

Monthly basic expenses include
1. Au pair’s pocket money: $785 p/m
2. Food and accommodation: provided by host

As the au pair does not receive a high pocket money, it’s kind to help a bit with small extra.
This is optional, but can help to find a great match as well
β€’ Travel allowance: $75 p/m
β€’ Phone plan: $30 p/m
β€’ Gym membership: $50 p/m
β€’ Museum card or cinema card: $40 p/m

Or other benefits to help your au pair feel more comfortable and welcome during their stay.

No. Your membership covers the matching process only, once you have found your au pair, your membership ends there. For the USA specifically, the next step is to connect with a US-based designated sponsor agency, which is a federal requirement. The J-1 cultural exchange visa, the only visa that legally permits someone to work as an au pair in the US, can only be obtained through an agency formally designated by the US Department of State.

Program fees for these agencies typically range from $9,000 to $12,500 per year, covering visa sponsorship, contracts, medical insurance, and support throughout the placement year. If you already found your match through us, you may be eligible for a discount of up to $2,000 depending on the agency.

For more information click here.

Under the US Department of State au pair program, host families are required to cover the cost of the au pair’s travel to the United States at the start of the placement. Return travel at the end of the program year is also generally the host family’s responsibility. These requirements are set by the au pair agency and the J-1 visa program regulations. Any additional travel, such as for personal trips or extensions, is typically the au pair’s own responsibility. All arrangements should be confirmed in the host family agreement before arrival.

The pocket money is paid directly by the host family to the au pair.

Once the au pair arrives in the host country, it is important that they open a local bank account so the monthly payments can be transferred easily. For candidates from the EU, it is often not necessary to open a local bank account.

There is always a small risk that a match does not work out as expected. To reduce this risk, our after care package includes an alignment meeting between the host family and the au pair before the start of the placement. During this meeting, important topics such as the start date, pocket money, vacation days, weekly schedule, and expectations are discussed to make sure everyone is on the same page.

If the match still does not work out, there is a transition period of 2–4 weeks during which both the host family and the au pair can look for a new match or decide on the next steps.

When Premium Matching Service families have an actie β€œAftercare package” at moment of rematch, we will find them a new candidate without extra costs.
