$1100 per month 20 hours per week

Working parents are always short on time. An au pair can help up to 30 hours per week, giving you more peace of mind and real quality time. They help with the kids, tidying up, cooking, school runs, etc.

More than 3,000 families chose an au pair through Nina.care: less stress, more structure, and children who learn English or Spanish along the way. Many have a driver’s license and specific experience with newborns. 👉 In many cases, your au pair can start within 2 months.

Important things to know - for host families in Canada

Hosting an au pair in Canada usually costs around CAD $800–1,200 per month in pocket money, plus free room and board. Families are also expected to pay for private health/accident insurance, and sometimes help with local transport or language courses. If using an agency, additional placement fees apply.

An au pair in Canada mainly helps with childcare (school drop-offs/pick-ups, babysitting, helping with homework, playing with children) and light household duties (tidying children’s rooms, preparing snacks, doing children’s laundry). Heavy housework or caring for elderly family members is not permitted.

The standard schedule is 20–30 hours per week. Au pairs must have at least one full day off per week and free time to attend language classes or explore. Paid vacation is usually 2 weeks for a 12-month stay, or pro-rata for shorter placements.

A written au pair agreement is highly recommended in Canada. While not always legally binding, it helps avoid misunderstandings by outlining duties, pocket money, working hours, holidays, and termination conditions.

  • Age: usually 18–30 years.
  • Canada does not have an official government “au pair visa.” Most au pairs come through the International Experience Canada (IEC) program, under the Working Holiday visa, which is available to citizens of certain countries.
  • This visa allows young people to work legally as an au pair/nanny while experiencing Canadian culture.
  • Private health insurance is required for the entire stay.
  • Maximum stay depends on nationality (often 12 months, sometimes extendable).

Families often use au pair agencies or online platforms to find candidates. Agencies are especially helpful in guiding applicants through the IEC visa process and ensuring contracts and insurance are in place.

If conflicts arise, the best first step is open communication. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, either party can end the agreement with advance notice (usually 2 weeks). Agencies, if involved, can mediate and arrange a rematch.

In Canada, au pairs are expected to be treated as temporary family members. Families include them in meals, outings, and cultural traditions. Cultural exchange is important: au pairs improve their English or French, while sharing their own language and culture with the children.
