Important things to know - for host families in Sweden

Hosting an au pair in Sweden costs at least SEK 7100 per month. In addition, host families must provide free room and board, including a private bedroom and three meals per day.

An au pair helps mainly with childcare (looking after children, school runs, playing, light meal prep) and light household duties (tidying, laundry, setting the table). They are not allowed to do heavy cleaning, gardening, or work outside the family household.

Au pairs in Sweden may work a maximum of 25 hours per week. They should also have sufficient free time to attend language courses and participate in cultural activities.

Yes. A written contract between the host family and the au pair is required in Sweden. It must outline duties, working hours, pocket money, and holiday entitlement to ensure clarity for both parties.

  • Age: 18–30 years.
  • The maximum stay is up to 12 months.
  • Au pairs must show a clear interest in the Swedish language and culture and be willing to study during their stay. This may include proof of prior language knowledge, academic interest in Scandinavian studies, or a personal motivation statement.

For residence permit applications, au pairs may need to provide:

  • A valid passport for the full duration of the stay
  • A health certificate issued within 3 months before departure
  • Proof of enrollment in a Swedish language course that fits the work schedule

Requirements can vary depending on nationality.

Families can find au pairs through official au pair agencies, online platforms, or private contacts. Many families prefer agencies since they handle contracts, visa guidance, and insurance.

If conflicts arise, the first step is open communication. If needed, the family or au pair can turn to the agency for mediation. Either party can end the agreement with two weeks’ notice (or immediately in serious cases).

The au pair should be welcomed as a temporary family member, not as staff. Families are expected to include the au pair in meals, family activities, and cultural traditions. Respect, openness, and support for language learning are key to successful integration.
