Jasmijn

Do you live in Spain, and you would like your children to be surrounded by different languages and culture since a really young age? Or maybe you are a future au pairand you wanna attend the amazing flamenco shows in the caves of Andalucía or go shopping in the busy streets ofvibrant Madrid?

Spain is much more than sunny days and siesta, and this wonderful country is rich in culture and traditions. Whether you’re a future au pair eager to experience Spanish culture firsthand, or a host family looking for extra childcare support and cultural exchange, this guide has everything you need.

For Au Pairs: No Paella Without the Basics 🍤

Thinking about becoming an au pair in Spain? Here’s what you need to qualify. To live with a Spanish host family, you should:

  • Be 18–30 years old
    • (EU and EFTA citizens can start at 17!)
  • Be unmarried and have no children
  • Be able to afford your trip to Spain
  • Have valid health insurance for your entire stay
  • Speak Spanish and be eager to improve your language skills
  • Be of non-Spanish nationality
  • Spanish should not be your native language
    • (This restriction does not apply to EU and EFTA citizens)

If all of the above applies to you, terrific! Spain is ready and waiting for your adventure. If not, don’t worry, there are plenty of other countries where you can enjoy an au pair experience.

Why Choose Spain?

Living with a Spanish host family is more than helping with childcare; it is a chance to fully immerse yourself in Spanish culture and family life. You can expect to assist with children and light household duties, participate in family meals and outings, and engage in Spanish traditions. There are many opportunities to improve your Spanish through daily interaction and practice. In your free time, you can explore cities, beaches, historic towns, and local festivals. From morning routines to weekend adventures, every day brings new experiences filled with sunshine, language, and culture.

Spain offers:

🇪🇸 A vibrant, sun-soaked lifestyle with plenty of cultural experiences

💃 Festivals, music, food, and rich traditions to explore

👨‍👩‍👧 The chance to become part of a welcoming Spanish family

🌏 Opportunities to improve your Spanish (and English!)

☀️ Beautiful beaches, historic cities, and countryside to discover

💛 Cultural exchange that benefits both your family and the au pair

It’s the perfect mix of adventure, learning, and everyday life in sunny Spain.

For Host Families

Thinking of welcoming an au pair into your Spanish home? Here’s what you need to qualify. Your household should be able to:

  • Have at least one child under 18 living in your home
  • Provide your au pair with a private room
  • Include your au pair in childcare and light household tasks
  • Speak Spanish in daily family life
    • (If your region has another official language like Catalan, Galician, or Basque, make sure to note this in your profile so prospective au pairs know what to expect)
  • Have a different nationality from your au pair / ensure your au pair is not a Spanish citizen

If you tick all the boxes, perfecto! You’re ready to start searching for your ideal au pair. If you don’t meet these requirements, unfortunately, you cannot host an au pair, but other cultural exchange opportunities may still be available.

Quick note: Use Nina.care to find au pairs who match your family’s needs, and be sure to check that your potential au pair also meets the requirements to stay in Spain.
