Au pair life in Norway

As an au pair in Norway, you become part of a culture that values trust, equality, and a strong work–life balance. Your days may include clear routines, shared meals, and plenty of time spent outdoors with the children.

Norway offers the chance to experience a country shaped by nature and simplicity, from vibrant cities and coastal towns to fjords, mountains, and long summer days or cozy winter evenings.

Living with a Norwegian host family gives you genuine insight into everyday life: local traditions, seasonal celebrations, practical routines, and the importance of balance and togetherness. It’s a welcoming environment where you can grow, contribute, and truly feel at home ❄️🇳🇴

Important things to know - for Norway

As an au pair in Norway, you’ll receive approximately 7000 NOK /month in pocket money. Next to this, your host family will also provide:

  • Free accommodation
  • All meals
  • Language course contribution: around 880 NOK/month

Read more about pocket money payments here.

Au pairs in Germany may work up to 30 hours per week (no more than 5 hours per day). You get at least one full day off per week. Paid holiday: 25 days for a 12-month stay.

An au pair supports with light childcare (school runs, babysitting, playing, helping with homework) and simple household tasks (setting the table, preparing meals, tidying children’s things). You will not do heavy cleaning, gardening, or full-time childcare.

A written standardised au pair contract is required in Norway. It must outline responsibilities, duration of stay, working hours, holidays and free days, pocket money, health insurance, and the language course arrangements. The contract is often needed for visa/residence permit applications.

Age Requirements:

  • 18–30 years old
  • You must not have turned 30 at the time of applying for the residence permit
  • Learn more about the age requirement on our help page.

Visa / Residence Permit Requirements:

EU / EEA Citizens:
  • Do not need an entry visa or residence permit
  • Must register with the Norwegian police after arrival
  • Read more about visa requirements here.
Non-EU / Non-EEA Citizens:
  • Norway no longer accepts new au pair applications from non-EU / non-EEA citizens
  • As of 15 March 2024, no new au pair residence permits are issued

Read more about visa requirements on the UDI (Norwegian Directorate of Immigration) website.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must live with your host family for the entire stay
  • You may only work for your host family (no side jobs allowed)
  • You must be willing to attend a Norwegian language course
  • Your host family is required to help cover the cost of the language course
  • A signed official Norwegian au pair contract is mandatory

You can use online platforms or au pair agencies. Agencies can be very helpful with contracts, insurance, and ensuring the au pair meets visa requirements. At Nina.care, we help you find your host family and provide additional support after a match.

If issues arise, you should first try direct communication. If the situation cannot be resolved, the agreement can be ended with reasonable notice (commonly 2 weeks). Agencies can step in to mediate and help arrange a replacement if needed.

Weekly schedule

The weekly schedule is a valuable guide to help you understand your tasks and responsibilities throughout the week. While it provides structure, it isn’t fixed.

With clear, timely communication, it can be adjusted whenever you or your host family have any changes or commitments.

Having a schedule not only sets expectations but also helps prevent misunderstandings. From our experience, many challenges arise simply because no plan was put in place.

That’s why we offer this template, to support smooth communication and a positive experience between you and your host family.
