Important things to know - for Australia

Pocket Money Range:

  • AUD 200-300 per week, depending on your hours and duties.

Additional Benefits:

  • Rent-free accommodation with your own room
  • Meals included
  • Some families may also offer extras like:
    • Use of the family car
    • A phone SIM or local transport card
    • Paid holiday time

Since there’s no fixed national rule for au pair pocket money in Australia, it’s important to discuss and clarify all financial details with your potential host family before finalising any arrangement. Every family’s offer may differ, so having clear expectations in writing is recommended.

Read more about pocket money payments here.

The standard arrangement is 25–35 hours per week, usually up to 6 hours per day. You must have at least one full day off per week and time for exploring, study, or social activities. For longer placements, 2–4 weeks of paid holiday per year is expected.

An au pair in Australia primarily assists with childcare (school drop-offs/pick-ups, play, babysitting, homework support) and light household duties (tidying children’s rooms, doing children’s laundry, preparing simple meals). You are not expected to do heavy cleaning or gardening, or to act as a professional nanny.

written au pair agreement is strongly recommended in Australia. It should outline duties, working hours, pocket money, holiday, insurance, and termination terms. This helps avoid misunderstandings and is often required by agencies.

Age Requirements:

  • Working Holiday Visa: 18-30 years old for most countries
  • Working Holiday Visa: 18-35 years old for some countries
  • Learn more about the age requirement on our help page.

Visa Requirements:

  • You’ll need a Working Holiday visa or Work & Holiday visa
  • You can stay for 12 months under the Working Holiday Visa, with possible extensions
  • You must have functional English for the Work & Holiday visa
  • You can be married but cannot bring a family
  • You can have children, but you cannot bring them with you.

Read more about visa requirements here.

You can use online platforms or au pair agencies. Agencies can be very helpful with contracts, insurance, and ensuring the au pair meets visa requirements. At Nina.care, we help you find your host family and provide additional support after a match.

If issues arise, you should first try direct communication. If the situation cannot be resolved, the agreement can be ended with reasonable notice (commonly 2 weeks). Agencies can step in to mediate and help arrange a replacement if needed.

Weekly schedule

The weekly schedule is a valuable guide to help you understand your tasks and responsibilities throughout the week. While it provides structure, it isn’t fixed.

With clear, timely communication, it can be adjusted whenever you or your host family have any changes or commitments.

Having a schedule not only sets expectations but also helps prevent misunderstandings. From our experience, many challenges arise simply because no plan was put in place.

That’s why we offer this template, to support smooth communication and a positive experience between you and your host family.
