Au pair life in the Netherlands

Imagine waking up in a cozy Dutch home, sunlight slipping through your curtains, and the sound of bicycles outside welcoming a new day. This is what it feels like to be an au pair in the Netherlands.

Living with a Dutch host family opens the door to a new culture: Biking to school runs, weekend trips through tulip fields, shared dinners, and laughter around the table. You’ll build friendships, create memories, and discover a second home you never expected to find. Leaving might feel hard now, but saying goodbye to your host family will be even harder.

Welcome to the au pair life in the Netherlands. We can’t wait to be part of your journey. 🌷🚲

Important things to know - for the Netherlands

As an au pair in the Netherlands, you’ll receive a monthly pocket allowance of €300-340. For EU au pairs, the monthly rate is typically around €340.

In addition to pocket money, you’ll receive:

  • Free accommodation (private room with a door and a window that can be opened)
  • Free meals
  • Dutch basic health insurance (you can apply for “zorgtoeslag” – healthcare allowance to offset the cost)

Read more about pocket money payments here.

By law, an au pair may help a maximum of 30 hours per week, spread over 5 days and no more than 8 hours per day. You get at least 2 full days off per week. During a 12-month stay, they are entitled to at least 2 weeks of paid holiday.

An au pair supports with light childcare (school runs, babysitting, playing, helping with homework) and simple household tasks (setting the table, preparing meals, tidying children’s things). You will not do heavy cleaning, gardening, or full-time childcare.

Yes. The standard au pair agreement is required in the Netherlands and filed with the IND. It defines hours, tasks, pocket money, holidays, and house rules. This ensures clarity for both family and au pair and is part of the official process.

Age Requirements:

  • 18-25 years old
  • Learn more about the age requirement on our help page.

Visa Requirements:
For EU Citizens:

  • No visa needed
  • Normal municipality registration if staying more than 3 months
  • The process is super simple compared to non-EU candidates

For Non-EU Citizens:

  • “Au Pair exchange visa” required
  • Must apply through a recognised IND sponsor
  • Cannot have had an au pair permit before
  • Read more about visa requirements here.

Additional Requirements:

  • Cannot be married
  • Cannot have children
  • No Dutch language required (sufficient conversational English is enough)
  • Language course is optional (though for some nationalities like Filipinos, a course certificate may be needed for the IND)
  • Cannot have other paid work during your stay

You can use online platforms or au pair agencies. Agencies can be very helpful with contracts, insurance, and ensuring the au pair meets visa requirements. At Nina.care, we help you find your host family and provide additional support after a match.

If issues arise, you should first try direct communication. If the situation cannot be resolved, the agreement may be terminated with reasonable notice (typically 2 weeks). Agencies can step in to mediate and help arrange a replacement if needed.

Weekly schedule

The weekly schedule is a valuable guide to help you understand your tasks and responsibilities throughout the week. While it provides structure, it isn’t fixed.

With clear, timely communication, it can be adjusted whenever you or your host family have any changes or commitments.

Having a schedule not only sets expectations but also helps prevent misunderstandings. From our experience, many challenges arise simply because no plan was put in place.

That’s why we offer this template, to support smooth communication and a positive experience between you and your host family.
