Au pair life in Ireland

As an au pair in Ireland, you’ll experience the heart of family life in a warm and welcoming culture. Irish families often enjoy simple routines: school runs, packed lunches, and evenings filled with conversation and laughter.

Ireland’s community spirit is strong, and you’ll notice it in everyday interactions. Weekends may bring chances to explore the countryside, visit local towns, or join family gatherings.

Living here gives you more than cultural knowledge, it gives you a sense of belonging in a country that values connection and hospitality 🍀🇮🇪

Important things to know - for Ireland 🇮🇪

For au pairs in Ireland, the pocket money situation is specific due to Ireland’s employment regulations: au pairs are legally recognised as workers, not cultural exchange participants. This means host families are considered employers and must comply with minimum wage and employment laws, according to the Workplace Relations Commission.

A typical au pair in Ireland can expect:

  • Weekly pocket money that varies by arrangement
  • Since au pairs are legally workers, you can expect to receive at least minimum wage
  • Free accommodation and meals in addition to pocket money

Read more about pocket money payments here.

The typical arrangement is 25–30 hours per week, with no more than about 5 hours per day. Au pairs must have at least one full day off per week, plus additional time to attend English-language classes or pursue social activities. Paid holidays are expected for stays over several months.

You will mainly help with childcare (school runs, babysitting, homework help, playtime) and light household duties (tidying up after children, laundry for kids, setting the table, preparing simple meals). You are not expected to do heavy cleaning, gardening, or act as a professional nanny.

written au pair agreement is recommended, even if not legally required. It should cover duties, working hours, pocket money, holidays, and insurance. This helps prevent misunderstandings.

Age Requirements:

  • Between 18 and 30 years old
  • Learn more about the age requirement on our help page

Visa Requirements:

  • EU/EFTA Citizens: No visa required! You can travel to Ireland freely, find a host family, and begin your stay.
  • Non-EU Citizens: You’ll need to apply for a visa before arrival. The exact type depends on your country, but you’ll generally need:
    • Proof of your host family arrangement
    • Proof of your English level
    • Bank statement showing sufficient funds (non-EU citizens need to prove several thousand euros in savings)
    • Return ticket or proof that you can buy one

You can use online platforms or au pair agencies. Agencies can be very helpful with contracts, insurance, and ensuring the au pair meets visa requirements. At Nina.care, we help you find your host family and provide additional support after a match.

If issues arise, you should first try direct communication. If the situation cannot be resolved, the agreement can be ended with reasonable notice (commonly 2 weeks). Agencies can step in to mediate and help arrange a replacement if needed.

Weekly schedule

The weekly schedule is a valuable guide to help you understand your tasks and responsibilities throughout the week. While it provides structure, it isn’t fixed.

With clear, timely communication, it can be adjusted whenever you or your host family have any changes or commitments.

Having a schedule not only sets expectations but also helps prevent misunderstandings. From our experience, many challenges arise simply because no plan was put in place.

That’s why we offer this template, to support smooth communication and a positive experience between you and your host family.
